Turner was also the director of HarmoKnight for the Nintendo 3DS, and Pokemon fans may know him as the first non-Japanese designer for the series, creating the likes of the Vanilluxe evolution line, the Obstagoon evolution line, and a handful of Generation VII’s Ultra Beasts. Turner, the director of that game, is going with the same cartoony art style for The Plucky Squire. The 2D segments of The Plucky Squire should be familiar to those who played Tembo the Badass Elephant, the sidescrolling Game Freak title published by Sega. This places the player into a sort of Toy Story-like scenario, where they are essentially a miniature character running around in a bedroom filled with all sorts of things to interact with, like a mug that contains another 2D section. Similar to the 2D-3D hybrid sections of The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds and Super Mario Odyssey, The Plucky Squire gives players the opportunity to break out of their storybook confines and explore the “real” world around them. What truly caught people’s attention was the tail-end of the game’s trailer, where the entire game flips on its head and turns into a 3D adventure in a blink of an eye. There are also mini-games where the entire game turns into a shooter or a Punch Out-style boxing game. There are even word puzzles to engage in, ones that can alter the world around the player, making it easier to traverse. Like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, players control their character in topdown and side-scrolling segments. The studio showed off the game’s Zelda-inspired world, rendered in a colourful storybook art style. Among these reveals was All Possible Futures’ debut game, The Plucky Squire. Former Pokemon Sword and Shield art director James Turner, for example, turned heads when he announced his departure from the Pokemon Company to start his own studio, All Possible Futures.įollowing this announcement came the Devolver Digital Showcase, where publishers around the world unveil their latest slate of video games.
